Unfocused Brain - Hallucination Generation

Description:

The Unfocused Brian - Hallucination Generation trance machine.

This program and schematic is designed to flash LED's in certain brain wave inducing patterns. The device is controlled by four buttons that switch the generator between Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Theta frequencies.

The inspiration for the device came from Mitch Altman's Brain Machine or SLM (Make Magazine, Issue #10), and Bryon Gysin's Dream Machine.

After building and trying out the SLM I noticed that certain transitions from one state to another created particularly strong visual hallucinations.

My project is a deviation from the original SLM. Since my hallucinations seemed to be the same with or without the audio component I decided to leave it out. I added buttons rather than a program so the user can change frequencies spontaneously. I built this project with the Attiny461 chip.

Please consult a qualified neurologist before using this or any electronic device. Don't shine bright lights or LEDs directly into your eyes. Don't run with scissors. Don't look directly into the sun. Don't put salt in your eyes.

Notes:

I have a second version of the trance machine in the works. It might utilize a potentio-meter to adjust the frequencies within each of the brain patterns, or it may be connected to a computer via usb and controlled with software.

I have used similar values to those of the SLM in developing the frequencies:

DescriptionRangeValue Used
Delta.5-4 Hz2.27 Hz
Theta4-8 Hz6.09 Hz
Alpha8-13 Hz11.1 Hz
Beta13-30 Hz14.4 Hz
